A Broad Abroad in Thailand

I signed up for a great blog, Authors Promoting Authors. Tina-Sue does a fantastic job running this very informative and interesting blog. The idea is for Authors to share their works with other authors and their audiences on their respective blogs. So with that in mind, I want to share with you A Broad Abroad in Thailand by Dodie Cross.

A Broad Abroad in Thailand follows a newlywed expat as she tries to settle into her new home and a life full of unforeseen challenges. Soon after her arrival in this exotic land, her problems begin: as she tries to learn the subtleties of the eastern squat toilet; then the fatal auto accident on the deadly highway that should have taken her life; to the final insult—bladder surgery by an inscrutable Thai doctor who decides to restore her virginity, while an intolerant nurse is after her with a vengeance─and an enema tube.

She leaves the hospital A.M.A. (Against Medical Advise) and then must be medivac’d back to the States with her catheter tube swaying in the breeze.

As if that’s not enough to slow down even the most determined of women, she must also deal with her new husband’s insatiable testosterone level─a textbook case of sexual fixation. Interwoven throughout her day-to-day life is the undercurrent of absolute control and jealousy perpetrated by a most unlikely source: the boss's wife, Ms. Anorexia, who manipulates the wives of the employees with her need to control every aspect of their lives: from shopping, to entertainment, to friends.

An unflagging sense of humor helps her through most obstacles, in a land whose people she has come to respect and admire, through times of seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Dick Williams

I heard from Legendary Hall of Fame Manager Dick Williams this week, and he has graciously agreed to review One Win Wonders. Mr. Williams spent over 50 years in baseball, as a player, coach, and Manager. His election to the Hall of Fame in 2008 was long overdue. A fact he pointed out that I was not aware of; Joe Landrum (Chapter 14) and him were roomates with the Ft. Worth Cats for two seasons in the late '40's.

New Praise for One Win Wonders

Lisa Winston, Minor League guru extrodinaire, had high praise for my book:

"What a labor of love by George Rose! Exhaustively researched and painstakingly detailed, "One Win Wonders" (like its predecessor "One Hit Wonders") is that unique and welcome tome that hails some of the lesser-known but no-less-deserving players of the past."

Lisa does some amazing work for MiLB.com and on her blog, www.gotmilb.com. I've admired her work and knowledge of baseball for a long time, check out her stuff if you get a chance!

Good to hear from you Lisa and thanks for the quote!

Sad Day for Baseball II

This has been a tragic few weeks for baseball. First George Kell and Nick Adenhart passed away, and yesterday we learned that Legendary broadcaster Harry Kalas and All-Star fan favorite Mark "The Bird" Fidrych died yesterday.

Kalas was in booth for 43 years, the last 38 with the Phillies. He was also the "voice of football", lending his golden pipes to NFL films for the past 30 years.

I grew up watching Fidrych in Detroit, and was a part of Bird mania. I had the privledge of meeting Mr. Fidrych on a few different occasions, meetings I will treasure.

RIP

Sad Day for Baseball II

As most of you know by now, Angels starter Nick Adenhart was killed in a car accident last night, just hours after he pitched 6 brilliant innings against the A's. The future was bright for the 22-year old, who started the season in the Angels' rotation. For his brief 4 game career, Nick recorded one win. He will be featured in the next "One Win Wonders" book. Last game before openers!

Today was the last game for the Tigers before they head to Toronto start the season. As always I'm optimistic, but very realistic about the upcomming year. It will be a tough road for Detroit, but with a few breaks they should stay in the hunt.

Happy Baseball!
