Sad Day for Baseball

Baseball lost one of its greats today, Hall of Famer George Kell passed away this morning at his home in Swifton, AK. He was 86.

Mr. Kell was a huge part of my childhood and a huge influence for my love of the game. He moved to the broadcast booth after his playing days, and stayed there for 35+ years, mostly for the Detroit Tigers. In 1976 he teamed up with Al Kaline for TV broadcasts of Tiger's games, and stayed there for the next 20 years. I have many memories of the his slow, southern-drawl delivery, but my favorite would be his call of Milt Wilcox's almost perfect game in 1983. Milt carried the gem into the 9th inning, and with two outs pinch hitter Jerry Hariston punched a ball up the middle to break up the perfect game. I've still not forgiven Hariston, and probably never will. But Mr. Kell's docile tones made it easier to stomach. He did that for every game, made you feel like the world was good and we were all just sittin' on his front porch drinking lemonade and watching a ballgame.

He will be missed.

First Day of Spring! (Officially)

Well, Spring has officially arrived! It will be a sunny one here in Michigan, albeit pretty chilly. The weather will be much better out in LA, where the final four teams have gathered to complete the World Baseball Classic. Korea, Japan, USA and Venezuela will battle it out for the right to be called the best in the World this year.

Ron Kaplan from the Baseball Bookshelf contacted me and asked to do a review on One Win Wonders. I am delighted Ron will be reviewing my book, I enjoy reading his articles. Check him out!

Enjoy the nice weather and Happy Baseball!

First Day of Spring!

I'm making today the official first day of Spring. It is 70, sunny, and if you listen really really close, you can hear the crack of the bat in some distant stadium. The start of the season is getting close, but we all know that it will be 39 degrees with snow flurries on Opening Day in Michigan.

I heard from one of the best in the sports talk radio business yesterday, Papa Joe Chevalier. Papa Joe and I spent many hours together when he was with Sporting News radio. He talked, and I listened on the hour and half commute I had home every day. I enjoy his work very much and he is always honest about sports and gives his guests and callers their say. He was kind of enough to agree to read One Win Wonders and lend me a few quotes. His "Papa Joe Show" is now based out of Las Vegas and is syndicated across the country. You can listen in or find out more at www.papajoetalk.com

My summer schedule is taking a little more shape, please keep checking back to see when I will be in your neighborhood! www.baseballwonders.com/appearances.htm
